The affinity of each note with the keynote is directly related to its position on the harmonic scale. Ludus Tonalis can be thought of as the most direct application of Hindemith's theory that the twelve tones of the equally tempered scale all relate to a single one of them (called a tonic or keynote).

Unlike Bach's piece, though, the non-fugal pieces in Ludus Tonalis frequently repeat the work's main theme, which makes listening to the work as a whole slightly less daunting to the novice.

Ludus Tonalis was intended to be the twentieth-century equivalent to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. The tonalities of the fugues follow the order of his Serie 1 and use the keynote C (see The Craft of Musical Composition). In between, there are twelve three-part fugues separated by eleven interludes, beginning in the tonality of the previous fugue and ending in the tonality of the next fugue (or in different tonality which is very close to that). The piece starts with a three-part Praeludium in C resembling Bach's toccatas, and ends with a Postludium which is an exact retrograde inversion of the Praeludium. While not for everyone, those listeners who do try Zarukin's Ludus Tonalis will be blown away.Ludus Tonalis ("Play of Tones" or "Tonal Game"), subtitled Kontrapunktische, tonal, und Klaviertechnische Übungen ( counterpoint, tonal and technical studies for the piano), is a piano work by Paul Hindemith that was composed in 1942 during his stay in the United States. Zarukin plays with strength and sensitivity and the recording captures it with vivid immediacy. The only reality here is Zarukin's performance on this recording and that performance on this recording is simply magnificent. Whether it would work in concert performed by an orchestra is beside the point. As Richter’s commanding live Ludus Tonalis on Pyramid is not easily available, Edward Aldwell’s solidly played version on. Its thirteen movements also deal with polyphonic challenges, and are cast in Hindemith’s earlier, more freewheeling style. Pavel Zarukin has concocted a captivating orchestral arrangement of the work, has executed it convincingly on the synthesizer, and has performed it compellingly on this recording. Bruhn does better with Hindemith’s virtually unknown 1927 Reihe Kleiner Stüke. Ludus Tonalis: Fuga IV In A: Con Energia/Lento, Grazioso/Tempo Primo. 3:33 PREVIEW Ludus Tonalis: Fuga I In C: Lento.

Like a rattler, you know it’s there but you don’t dare look. The paradigm of Hindemiths mould of musical thinking was to be the Ludus tonalis, a modern-day equivalent of the Kunstbuch although it would go beyond the scope of superficial craftsmanship and constitute an engrossing, concentrated, highly expressive work of musical art. 1995 Preview SONG TIME Ludus Tonalis: Prld: Moderato/Arioso, Tranquillo/Lento/Solenne, Largo. The 1943 Ludus Tonalis set for solo piano, premiered by Artur Schnabel in Chicago that year, is Hindemith’s attempt at a Goldberg Variations, contrapuntal as a dyspeptic snake, turning this way and that, striking without warning. But now that it's here, the world can only be grateful because, as unlikely as it seems, this is one heck of a performance of Ludus Tonalis. Was the world really crying out for an orchestral transcription of Paul Hindemith's Ludus Tonalis performing on the Roland XP-50? Probably not: in fact, the world probably was not crying out for any performance at all of Hindemith's twentieth century Art of the Fugue, much less an orchestral arrangement played on a synthesizer. Fuga prima in C (Lento) MP3 Song by Alena Cherny from the album Hindemith: Ludus Tonalis (2019). Why this recording exists is anybody's guess.
